Buying a Bed for a Child

When buying a bed for your child, it is important to look at several points before you  make a final decision.  Don't let your child sleep on a hand me down, unless it is only a few years old or absolutely necessary.

Opposite is a few points to get you started, again, spend as much as you can afford.

If you are buying a bed for a teenager, do you have the room for a larger bed?  It may sound ridiculous now, but it will give them a more comfortable sleeping area, and may be useful when they first leave home.

What age is your child, are you looking at buying a bed to last for a few years or one to last longer

Your child will be growing, expect to change the bed as he grows up.

If buying a Bunk Bed, check the height of the ceiling before ordering.

If your child suffers from asthma or allergies, consider buying a special mattress, either latex or one which has been treated.  A cheaper alternative is to use a barrier cover for the mattress

Starter Bed

A starter bed is ideal for toddlers who have out grown their cot and are not ready for a full size single bed.  They are usually smaller than a standard single bed, and lower, making it easier and safer for the child to get in and out of bed.

Single Bed

This is the most popular bed brought for children.  The cheaper models with storage tends to feature sliding doors instead of drawers and a platform base.

The mid priced ranges usually offer sprung bases and drawers.

Bunk Beds

These are popular as they are space saving, and fun.  Available in many finishes including pine, wood finish and metal.  If purchasing bunk beds, spend as much as you can, the more solid they are, the better.  Also check that they meet the new European Standard EN747.

Fun Beds

These again are available in many finishes.

These beds vary from standard cabin beds with storage and perhaps a desk, to funky cars and even beds with slides and towers.  Again check with the retailer that they are safe.  Also remember the age of your child, he may love it now, but what about in a years time?
