Buying a Bed

Below we have listed different types of springs and bases.  Although we have not covered everything that is available, we have covered the most popular types.

Open Springs

Continuous Springs

Pocket Springs

Foam mattresses

The most common spring used in budget to middle priced ranges of mattresses.  Rows of springs are connected at the top and the bottom by wire. A continuous spring unit is made up of one length of wire, twisted into springs.  This type of unit is usually found in mid priced ranges. Pocket springs are housed individually in small fabric pockets.  They are then attached to each other by either clips, tying or glue.  The best are centre tied, this allows the spring more flexibility.  This type of spring is usually found in the mid to upper priced ranges. Polyurethane foams are the most commonLatex, is a top quality material produced from the sap of rubber trees.  It is durable and available in different comfort options.  Some are anti-microbial.

Bases - Platform and Sprung Edge

Slatted Bases

Adjustable Bases

Bedstead Bases

Platform bases contain a solid top, often found on the cheaper models.  This gives a firmer feel to the mattress.  Sprung edge divan bases contain a full spring unit mounted on a wooden frame.  They provide even support and increase the life of the mattress. Slatted bases are made up of wooden or laminated slats either fixed or flexible.   This type of base is usually found on bedsteads. These used to be looked upon as either sheer indulgence by the wealthy few or as an aid to those suffering from medical complaints, but now are becoming more popular with the younger generations.  The cheaper options are usually manual and offer a small amount of positions, usually the head and foot end.  The more expensive models are electrical, and are operated by a handset or remote control, these tend to offer a larger amount of positions and some even offer massage. Now, a very popular option.  The choice of bedsteads is wide, from traditional pine or metal beds to modern.  The types of bases used varies but the most popular are wooden slats, either fixed or flexible, or, wire mesh.

Some bedsteads are available as surrounds, which can fit around a divan bed - a good choice if you have a fairly new divan bed.
